Three trucks are parked outside the U.S. Xpress Enterprises building in Chattanooga One of the nation s biggest trucking companies is laying off nearly 100 employees at its Chattanooga headquarters and its nearby repair depot in Tunnel Hill, Ga.U.S. Xpress Enterprises, Inc., ranked as America s 16th biggest truck carrier with more than 10,000 employees nationwide, said it laid off central office and support staff at its Chattanooga and Tunnel Hill facilities today due to a change in the company s business focus.Danna Bailey, director of communications for U.S. Xpress, said no drivers are affected by the layoffs. But she said U.S. Xpress is shifting its business strategy and will need fewer corporate support staffers. Today we made the difficult decision to lay off just over 100 people as part of a shift in company focus, Bailey, said in a statemen tonightt. We simply needed to make sure our resources and people match our strategic direction. We do not have any plans to cut any lines of business. Bailey said the company s human resources department is offering assistance for anyone who would like help in their transition to the job market. NASHVILLE - Tennessee and 17 local governments, including Hamilton County and Chattanooga, recently received awards from a professional organization for presenting budgets of the very highest quality.
