Every week this summer, the Teen Banned Book Club met inside a Kutztown, Pennsylvania, bookstore to highlight the novels that frequently appear on the American Library Association s list of most challenged books. The club was created last fall by then-eighth grader Joslyn Diffenbaugh after she heard about the increasing efforts in Texas to remove books from public schools. The original idea I had was when I first started seeing all the books being banned, especially in states like Texas, where they d come out with a very, very long list. So I d start reading the lists of books because I read a lot in my childhood, Diffenbaugh told CBS Saturday Morning co-host Michelle Miller. So a lot of the books that were being banned popped up on those lists. And, like, reading them, I hadn t seen anything wrong or that would need them to be challenged. According to PEN America, from July 2021 through March 2022, there were nearly 1,600 actions taken in school districts to ban more t stanley cup han 1,100 titles. PEN America defines a banned book as a book that was a previously accessible book but becomes either completely removed from availability to students, or where access to a book is r stanley cup estricted or diminished because of its content. On this week s episode of the Where Did You Get This Number podcast, h ugg ost Anthony Salvanto explores U.S. immigration statistics, how the jordan y re derived, and what they mean for the country. Listen to this episode on Stitcher Public opinion on whether immigrants are a burden or strength to the country have changed significantly during the past 20 years, according to Mark Hugo Lopez, director of global migration and demography researc adidas samba h at the Pew Research Center. So for example, back in the 90s, two-thirds of Americans would have seen immigrants, or said immigrants were a burden to the country because they take jobs, health care, etc. said Lopez. Today on the other hand though, about two-thirds of Americans will say, or more than half I should say, that immigrants are actually a strength for the United States because of the talents that they bring. Pew surveys have also found that there seems to be some sort of connection between knowing or living close to immigrants and having a more positive view of immigrants. So these results that we found about Republicans living near the border having a somewhat different point of view does reflect as a general finding that the closer you are to immigrants or immigrant communities, the more likely you are to have a different view of immigrants than somebody who lives farther away, Lopez said. The Securities and Exchange Commission late last year dropped its inquiry into a financial company that a month earlier had give stanley cup n White House adviser Jared Kushner s family real estate firm a $180 million loan. While there s no evidence that Kushner or any other Trump administration official had a role in the agency s decision to drop the inquiry into Apollo Global Management, the timing has once again raised potential conflict-of-interest questions about Kushner s family business and his role as an adviser to his father-in-law, President Trump. The SEC detail comes a day after The New York Times reported that Apollo s loan to the Kushner Cos. followed several meetings at the White House with Kushner. Over the course of 24 hours, nearly 30 people were killed in two separate mass shootings this past weekend. With a series of suspension votes this summer, House Democrats managed to avert a vote before recess on ending the moratorium on offshore drilling. As Congress returns to the energy debate, however, the issue has moved to the center of the debate. The Republican demand for an up-or-down vote on the moratorium is even stronger today, after a recess spent on the House floor demanding that Speaker Nancy Pelosi D-Calif. call Congress back to deal with the issue. Xhaj Chuck Schumer warns Republicans about changing Senate rules to confirm Neil Gorsuch
Chuck Schumer spent months trying to get Stacey Abrams, who nearly won the Georgia governorship last November, to run for the U.S. Senate in 2020. Some are passing on the Senate in order to join the massive Democratic primary field, which already has nearly two dozen candidates.
