When Harry Potter first appeared in books and on screen alongside his loyal owl Hedwig, many folks were so charmed that they ran out and bought pet owls of their very own. But know that the books and movies have run their course, the magic of owning a nocturnal

Pam Toothill, of the Owlcentre in North Wales for example, says that before the films, her sanctuary had a mere six owls. After the films, that number swelled to 100. And that only accounting for the area more responsible former pet owners, not the ones who simply released their domesticated owls into the wild. It hardly the first time that a series aimed at children has guided pet ownership decisions. Putting aside the spotted puppy craze that followed 101 Dalmatians, the article from the Mirror includes this tidbit: The Harry Potter owl craze echoes that of the Teenage

Anyone who has read adventure novels, especially from certain time periods, has picked up a few questionable pieces of 8220 cientifically proven information. The James Bond novels alone left me believing a couple of different myths though not the one about homosexuals being unable to whistle . Recently I posted about a well-known science myth started by a James Bond novel that a sumo wrestler was traine

The eponymous villain, in the novels, has a mistress who he has entirely painted gold, except for a strip down her back that allows her skin to breathe. He eventually murders her by painting the strip down her back as well, leaving her to suffocate. It picked up in the movie because it makes for a fantastic visual image. Even the producers believed the science behind this, leaving a patch of the actress skin unpainted in order to keep her from dying on camera.

Sometimes you want to smoke when you drink. Somewhere down the road, that turns into always smoking when you drink. Eventually that turns into just smoking. Cigarettes can be a tough habit to kick. But smokers might soon have some help. Scientists at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York have cooked up a possible vaccine for nicotine dependency. Unfortunately for your buzz, but thankfully for your lungs, the vaccine takes all the relaxation, all the joy out of your nic fix. Tested in mice, it blocks the effects of nicotine before they can hit the heart and the brain. So it as if you never puffed on that cig. Cut to a clip of a pack of mangy mice puffing on Marlboros in the back alley of a doll-sized bar . This vaccine could be given to a perso

This is a video about a small company called re:char, who build environment-saving factories inside cargo containers and ship them all over the world. Founded by a former soil scientist, Jason Aramburu, re:char goal is to help small farms grow healthier crops 鈥?and reduce their carbon footprint at the same time. He and his team invented what is literally a factory in a box, which allows small communities to turn waste into fertilizer. They use a kiln that turns anything from sewage to plant material into a coal-like substance called biochar 鈥?which is in turn used as fertilizer. Once the biochar is mixed into soil, it creates a more nutrient-rich environment for crops. And over a year time, it sequesters the amount of carbon that two cars would emit in a year. So it actually a carbon negative device, that feeds people and cleans the environment at
