Schoolchildren in Tennessee will spend nearly a third less time taking standardized tests as part of forms adopted after the costly fiasco of TNReady earlier this year.State Education Commissioner Candice McQueen on Thursday said state assessments will change significantly in response to feedback from educators, parents, and students - including eliminating Part I in all subjects, restructuring the test to better fit within the
asics school day and year, and reducing overall testing time.McQueen said the changes come as the department finalizes its contract with Questar, the company that will administer TCAP tests in the coming school year. We have learned a tremendous amount from our testing experience this past year, and we want to make the right adjustments to create a positive, balanced culture around testing in Tennessee s classrooms, McQueen
airforces said in a news release. ...We are still working toward the same goal of providing aligned, rigorous assessments to measure what our students know and can do, but now we have a smarter logistical approach and a strong partnership with Questar to achieve this goal. Testing changes vary by grade. Students in grades 3-8, students will have tests that are more than three hours shorte Qbxy I-75 bridge railing collapse: Four things you should know while traveling

The answer is yes, said Boyd Patterson, one of Mayor Ron Littlefield s two Gang Task Force coordinators, on Tuesday. There are some specific criminal organizations in Chattanooga to whom the RICO bill could be applied. The Chattanooga-initiated bill, which legislative records show Gov. Bill Haslam signed May 21, became an official state statute on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, Haslam held a ceremonial signing of the bill with Littlefield, former prosecutor Patterson, the Gang Task Force s outreach coordinator, Fred Houser, and several local lawmakers who sponsored the measure in attendance. The measure expands the RICO law, which was restricted to child pornography and drug trafficking. It redefines racketeering activity to include committing, attempting to commit, conspiring to commit or soliciting or coercing someone else to commit a criminal gang offense, according to a legislative summary of the legislation. Those offenses include threatening or knowingly causing i

I think [developers] gave up more than they gained, Stein said. But Mike Price, owner of MAP Engineers, said the extra requirements could have driven developers to build outside Chattanooga, in the unincorporated part of Hamilton County or beyond. If you develop inside the city it will cost you more, no ifs, ands or buts, Price told the stormwater board Wednesday. The board has been working to craft language incorporating requirements of the city s 2010 stormwater permit into city code. The basic rule is that builders of new developments and significant redevelopments have to make sure the first

That s compared to a 29 percent increase in cities. The formula holds true for Tennessee s largest cities: Knoxville s suburban poverty rate rose 50.1 percent, compared to 15.3 percent in the city. Memphis rate was 42.5 percent in the suburbs, 33.4 percent in the city, and Nashville s was 87.9 percent and 68.7 percent, respectively.Chattanooga turned the numbers on their heads: Suburban poverty grew by 52 percent, compared to 75.2 percent for the city between 2000 and 2011.The Brookings researchers and local experts pointed out that the percentage increase isn t the same as numbers of people -- the large majority of the poor still live in urban areas. It s not clear exactly why Chattanooga s numbers are so different in the study, said Ken Chilton, president and CEO of the Ochs Institute for Metropolitan Studies here.
