CHICAGO, Ill. For the last few years, libraries have begun leveraging their resources in the fight against the deadly opioid crisis, providing critically needed information, and services. And while its too early to measure the impact they are having, libraries are playing an increasingly active role in prevention and recovery efforts. Every day, 130 Americans die from an opioid overdose. Its an epi salomon demic that Public Library Association Deputy Director Larra Clark says has placed libraries and their staff on the frontlines. If there is an issue that s playing out in this country libraries are almost certainly part of that story, said Clark. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 1999 to 2017, almost 400,000 people died from an overdose involving an opioid, including prescription and illicit drugs. Three overdoses inside the Peoria Public Library in central Illinois in less than a year forced administrators there to act.
